The Black Death
Long term consequences: The Black Death killed an estimated 75-200 million people in the 14th century, the plague spread so quickly that before any physicians or the government had time to react about 1/3 of the population in Europe had already been killed. Europeans living in isolated areas suffered less than the people living in popular areas. Short term consequences: The plague caused a fever and a painful swelling of the lymph glands called buboes. It also caused red spots on the skin like a rash which eventually turned black and caused problems on the skin.
The cause of the Black Death's virus was yersin bacillus was the bacteria that is common in the stomach of certain fleas. The fleas would live on small rodents and their would ordinarily be a balance between the bacillus, flea, and rat which would cause no harm to other creatures. There a many environmental conditions that caused the bacteria to multiply and become stronger this would cause the bacteria to spread and the plague to break out. When the plague breaks out it can take different forms, the most common is bubonic which is spread by flea bites which will kill about 50% affected, it can also take the pneumonic or septicemic form which is spread through the respiratory system this would kill 100% of the people affected.
Effects on: Economy: As everyone is dying there is no one to basically do anything. The farmers cannot farm and make money off of their products, merchants cannot trade and make money off of their goods, and the rest of the people cannot do their work and make money for it. Thus, the demand for workers and goods was high. The economy began to fell as the Black Death became an important time period to make sure the people are healthy and fighting the bacteria. Religion: The Christians started to blame different groups such as Jews and foreigners because they thought they were to blame for this crisis. It also effected the Christian church because the Christians would pray devoutly for the plague to disappear and for the health of their loved ones, the prayers were not answered so a period of political turmoil and philosophical questioning arose. Politics: Malnutrition, poverty, disease and hunger, coupled with war, growing inflation and other economic concerns were important problems that the government and government officials had to deal with. urself
