Jeanette Walls- Author of the book.m in character. Tells the story of hr family, their constant moves, and feeling ashamed about her backround. She wroks on te newspaper in highschool then goes to college and becomes journalist. marries Eric who she later divorces and later marries John.
Brian Walls- Jeanettes younger brother. Tries to stick up for his sisters when they are young. His grandmother tries to sexually assault him. he dosent trust his father from a young age. becomes a police detective.
Lilly Ruth maureen Walls- Called Maureen and is the Walls youngest daughter. she has mental problems. She stabs her mother and is put into a hospital fr awhile.
Lilly Smith- Jeanettes gradmother and Rosemary's mother. She was a teacher. She was very strict with Rosemary. The Walls stay with their grandmother in Phoenix.
Erma Walls- Jeanettes grandmother. Rex's mother. She lives in West Virginia. The walls lived with her for a short period of time.
Uncle Stanley- Jeanettes unlce. Lives with his parents and innapropriately touches Jeanette.
Mike Armstrong- Owner and editor of the Phoenix which is a newspaper. Jeanette gets a job interning at the Phoenix and mr. Armstrong offers her a full time job.
Dinitia Hewitt- Jeanettes classmate in Welch. African American . Bullied and beat jeanette and her brother. They later became freinds when Dinitia sa jenette help someone escape a dog attack.
Chuck Yeager- Famous aviator from West Virginia. Visits jeanettes high school and she interviews him a personal interview for the school newspaper.
Billy Deel- He and his father moved to Battle Mountain when Jeanette is eight. he is eleven and has been in trouble. He thins Jeanette is his girlfriend and tries to sexaully force himself onto her. he shoots a bb gun into Jeanetts house when her parents arent home. Jeanette and Lori shoot at him with their father gun which forces the family to move to avoid trouble with the police.
Rex Walls- Jeanettes father. Alcholic and gambler. Has trouble keeping jobs and is constantly moving the family in the middle of the night to avoid bill collectors. he creates stories to tell the children, giving them stars for christmas gifts and telling them they are being chased by the FBI.
Rosemary Walls- Jeanettes mother. She was a school teacher and artist. She thinks being homeless is an adventure.
Eric- Jeanette dates him in college and moves in with him after she gaduates. They later get married and live in an apartment on Park Avenue.
Lori Walls- ldest of the Wall's siblings. Jeanettes older sister. She and jeanette save their money to move to new York when they are in high school. She tries to protect the younger children.
Ted Walls- Jeanettes grandfather and Rex's father.
John- Jeanettes second husband. They buy and old country farm house and invite Jeanettes family for Thanksgiving. John moved around a lot like Jeanette while growing up. His mother had been raised in Appalachia.
