The Glass Castle
Section two of The Glass Castle is called the Desert. It starts with Jeanettes first memory as a child.. She remembers when she was making hot dogs in the trailer alone on the gas stove. She gets burned by the fire and has to go to the hospital bcause it is so serious. The doctors help her by taking skin from her thigh and replacing the burned skin with it on her body. They are suspicious and ask her why a three year old is allowed to use a stove. She likes the hospital because its quite and the nurse gives her chewing gum. She also has a room by herself. At home she has to share a room with her brother and sister. Her parents distrust hospitals and dont like the doctors or nurses. Her father takes her out of the hospital without permission and skips paying the bill. Jeanette likes fire and steals her fathers matches. Her favotite toy is a tinkerbell figure and one day she accidentally burns she doll and melts its face. The family moves usddenly in the middle of the night and Jeanette forgets tinkerbell. The Wall family moves around a lot and usually late in the night. Their fathe tells them that someone is after them. Their mother says that they are bing chased by bill collectors. Sometimes they stay wiht grandma smith, her mothers mother. They dont usually stay long because her father and grandmother argue. Her father tells the family they are going to stay in one place for awhile. He is inventing something they call the praspector. its something to detct gold nuggets. Jeanettes father talks about building the family a glass castle where all the rooms are made of glass. Her father has a alcohol and gambling problem. Jeanettes little sister Mary Charlene dies in her crib. After that her father is depressed and rinks even more. The family continues to move around. First they go to Las Vegas and then they go to San Fransisco. next they go to Midland. One Christmas they cant afford any money to get their kids presents so the father takes the kids to the desert and lets them pick out a star. They move Blythe and Jenette starts the first grade. Some of the students call her teachers pet and beat her up after school. Her brother comes with her to beat up the bullies but he gets beaten up by them. They move to Battle Mountain. Jeanetees mother beomes a teacher . but that dosent work out because she cant control the students. When Jeanette turns eight Billy Deel moves to Battle Mountain. Billy is older than Jeanette and he wants her to be his girlfreind. he tries to force himself onto her. He arrives at her house one day shoots the house with a bb gun. Jeanettes sister shots at Billy with her fathers gun and they have to move again to escape the police. They moved to a house near Phoneix that Rosemary inherited when their mother died.. They soon run out of money and they father gets fired from his job. When Jeanette turns ten she asks for her father to stop drinking. it dosent last long and the family moves to West Virginia where her fathers family live.s.
In section three of the Glass Castle the family moves to Welch. The town is very poor. Jeanette is placed in a learning disablities class. The other kids dont like her and pick fights with her. Jeanette helps a young black kid escape a dog attack. Her grandmother Erma and uncle Stanley tell her that her classmates will call her a nigger lover because she helped the boy. Her parents leave the them to return to Phoneix so they can get some belongings. Erma forces herself onto Jeanettes younger brother Brian. The parents return and their father isn't angry about what happened to them. Jeanette becomes friends with Caissidy Pastor. Jeanetee and her brother are teased by kids in the nieghborhood. When winter comes they have no heat. Their grandmother dies from alcohol and their uncle falls asleep with a cigarette and their house burns down. Jeanettes grandfather and uncle move to another apartment. move somewhere else. to another apartment. One day when the went to visit their uncle he touched her innapropriately but hr mother tells her its a crime of perception. The child welfare officer to check on the children. Rosemary gets a job in teaching. They are still poor and the kids still look for food in the garbage. Jeanette works for the school newspaper. She loves journalism and gets to see how the rest of the world lives through her job. Thats summer her mother goes away to renew her teaching certification. Her sister Lori goes to summer camp. When Lori returns from camp she and Jeanette start saving money to escape from Welch. When Jeanette becomes a junior she interviews Chuck Yeager. He is a pilot. When school is over Jeanette leaves for New York on a bus.
In section four of The Glass Castle is called New York. Jeanette arrives in New York and lives in Greenwhich Village with her sister Lori. she gets a job at a fast food resturant. She enrolls herself into a public school and gets a job interning at a newspaper. The owner offers her a full time job. Lori and Jeanette bring Brian and Maureen to live with them. Jeanette goes to Barnard college. Their parents arrive in New York three years later so they can be a family again. They move in with Lori after they have been evicted from their second apartment in New York. Lori is eventually forced to kick them out because of their fathers drinking problem. Jeanette feels bad that her parents are homeless but they dont want to change. She may have to drop out of college beacause she dosent have enough tuition monye. her father gives her the money he won in a poker game. she thinks they need it more than she does but her parents insist. After college Jeanette gets married and moved into an paartment on Park Avenue. She has a full time job working at a magazine. She keeps her family a secret from her husband and job. One day her mother visits Lori with news that her uncle Jim died and she wants her to help buy his land back. This is land the mother inherited and it is worth a million dollars. Her brother Brian becomes a policeman and moves to Long Island. Maureen graduates from high school and startd having problems. she moves back with erh parents and her behavior deterioates. She is arrested and put in a hospital whn she stabs her mother. Jeanetees father and calls her to ask her to visit him. When she visits she tells her that he is dying. He has a heart attack and dies a few weeks later. This changes Jeanette . She bgins to feel restless and eventually divorces Eric.
Section one of the Glass Castle is called a Woman on the Street. The story starts with Jeannette Walls riding in a taxi going to a party. The taxi stops and she sees her mother going through a trash can. She is embarrassed so she slides down in the seat so her mother can't see her. Shes so upset by the thought of her mother seeing her that she decides to back to her apartment on Park Avenue. Jeanette lives in anice apartment. She feels badly because she has furniture and jewelry and her parents live on the streets.. She has treid to help her parents in the past but her mother always asks for silly things like a membership in a gym. Jeanette calls her mothers friend for her mother to get in touch with her. This is the only way they cna communicate. When her mothrcalls Jeanette invites hrer to the apartemnt byt her mother said she would rather go out. They meet at her mother favorite chinese resturant . When jeanette offers to help her mother asks for a electrolysis. Jeanette tells her mother that she wants to help the quality of her life. Her mother says she needs help because her values are all confused. She tells her she should accept her parents for who they are tell people the truth about them.
In section five of the Glass Castle Jeanette remarries a man named John five years later. She moves into a country house with him and invites her family for thanksgiving.. They meet her mother and Lori at the train station. When they arrived at the house her brother Brian and his eight year old daughter Veronica were there. Brian and his wife had divorced and he had become a decorated sargent detective. Jeanette showd her mom and sister their gardens and work they had done themselves. Jeanettes mother told her some good news. She had been a squatter for almost fifteen years and they were finally able to buy their apartment for a dollar a piece. She couldnt stay to visit because she had to get back for a board metting for the squatters. She had heard from Maureen, who is still in California, and thinking of coming back for a visit. They all started telling stories of their father and Jeanettes husband suggested a toast to their father. Their mother held up her glass and said '' life with your father is never boring.''
