Manatees, an endangered species
Country/Ecosystem of Origin Manatees are a migratory species. Within the United States, they are concentrated in Florida in the winter. In summer months, they can be found as far west as Texas and as far north as Massachusetts, but summer sightings in Alabama, Georgia and South Carolina are more common. West Indian manatees can also be found in the coastal and inland waterways of Central America and along the northern coast of South America,
Manatees can be found in shallow, slow-moving rivers, estuaries, saltwater bays, canals, and coastal areas — particularly where seagrass beds or freshwater vegetation flourish.
Over the years, researchers have attempted to identify and quantify West Indian manatee distribution, population size and causes of mortality in order to understand manatees and the threats to their survival. Humans make up 33% of all Manatee related deaths. 27% of Manatees are killed by watercraft collisions like in the picture above. The crushing impact of the boat and/or slashing of the propellers. In the case of large power vessels and barges moving through shallow waters, manatees may be caught between the vessel and the water bottom. 3% are killed by getting crushed by flood gates or canal locks and 3% are killed by humans, hunting for their skins or even for fun.
Also known as the sea cow, the manatee is one of the most endangered marine mammals in coastal waters of the United States today. If it is removed from it's environment it could greatly effect it's surrounding food chain.
How you can help save ~Manatees~ 1. Choose a non-motorized boat in areas with manatees 2. Join the Manatee Sighting Network 3. Visit Manatees at aquarium to support their conservation 4.LEAVE MANATEES THEIR OWN SPACE
