Chapter 1 - An Unexpected Party
"This is a story of how a Baggins had an adventure, and found himself doing and saying things altogether unexpected." (page 2)
1. Bilbo led a comfy, unadventurous life in his hobbit-hole.
2. Gandalf invited Bilbo to go an adventure with him.
3. Bagginses never went on adventures....
4. Gandalf marked Bilbo's door so the dwarves would know where to find him.
5. The dwarves needed Bilbo to be their burglar.
6. The dragon, Smaug, stole the dwarves' rightful treasure.
7. The Took side of BIlbo was awakened by the dwarves' song.
8. The dwarves sang a song of a fierce and jealous love, the desire of dwarves.
9. For a moment, Bilbo longed to see great mountains, trees, waterfalls, cavers, and to carry a sword rather than a walking stick.
10. Some of the dwarves had little confidence in Bilbo, but Gandalf saw something BIG in that little hobbit.
"This chapter introduces the reader to the hero, Bilbo, and to his Call to Adventure. Hesitant, stubborn, and maybe a little unsure, Bilbo refuses the call, but the song of the dwarves stirred something in him that perhaps he didn't even know he had...I think many people can really relate to this call - to things unknown, of great mystery, and of beautiful treasure...
