Middle East Timeline
1915-Husayn-McMahon Correspondance where pledges for an independent Arab state were made.
1914-World War I begins because of secret alliances, militarism, imperialism, and nationalism. (lots of -ism's).
Hey, wanna split the Arab territories in the Middle East?
1916: Sykes-Picot Agreement-- France and Great Britain agree to split the Arab territories in the Middle East if they won World War I.
Sure. Let's do that right after we win World War I.
1917 Memo: British support for an independent Jewish homeland stated in Balfour Declaration.
Yassir Arafat created and led the Palestinian Liberation Organization (PLO) until his death. (1929-2004)
Mandate System (1917-1947) Middle Eastern Territories ruled by Great Britain and France. Mandate is the right to rule.
Allies won WW1.
World War II: 1937-1945 Depending on the area, the second world war started at different times.
1947: United Nations Partition Plan British turned over their land in the Middle East to the United Nations because they deemed the land ungovernable.
1948-Arab-Israeli War aka Al Nakbah "The Disaster" Israel was attacked by five Arab nations after it declared independence in 1947. Israel won and gained land. Arabs had to leave and become refugees.
Six Day War: 1967 Israel wins against 5 Arab nations. Again. Israel takes Gaza, West Bank,, Golan Heights, Sinai Peninsula, and East Jerusalem. Settlements were built to claim the land as theirs.
Now, we have the Road Map to Peace-- a current agreement supported by the United States to create lasting peace in the Middle East.
Yom Kippur War (1973) & Camp David Accords (1979) Israel returned Sinai Peninsula in return for Egypt's recognition as a country after winning the fight. Oslo Accords (1993) Israelis and Pakistanians work toward a "two state" option
