Operation Typhoon Shore Author: Joshua Mowll For Young Adults
The story starts in a very dramatic way, Joshua Mowll starts off the story by telling me that the ship is hit by a typhoon and is wrecked. I am easily hooked by the different adventurous events, therefore, I would not want to put the book down. The author keeps on asking questions whether the ship is going to sink or is it going to survive in the bad weather. After the typhoon the ship lands at Sulphur Island and the Kalaxx warriors are secretly mining, and they do not want to be found. This keeps me wondering if they are going to be found or not. This is why I fiinished reading this book.
About the Author Joshua Mowll lives in Pimlico, London. He studied design at Canterbury and Ipswich and has worked for a national newspaper as a graphic artist since 1994. Operation Typhoon Shore is the second book in trilogy.
What happens? It starts with the adventure of Becca and Doug MacKenzie escaping from Wenzi Island and Sheng-Fat, but the action is not over yet. Their ship, the Expedient, is struck by a powerful typhoon in the Celebes Sea which blew it ashore to Sulphur Island(look at map) Doug and Becca, together with their uncle, Captain MacKenzie, and his brave crew and the Sujing Quantou warriors find themselves facing their enemy, Julius Pembleton-Crozier. Julius hired an army called the Kalaxx warriors and with the help of Alfonso Borelli, the betrayer, he gived Julius the Eastern gyrolabe (a special device), which he stole from Captain Mackenzie. The captain's Northern gyrolabe is stolen by the Kalaxx. Becca and Doug discover the Southern chapter of The 99 Elements (a quater of a special book) and the Southern gyrolabe. Xu and Xi( two warriors of the Sujing Quantou) manage to save the southern part of The 99 Elements but the southern gyrolabe is taken by Julius Pembleton-Crozier. More about gyrolabes Gyrolabe is a fictional device created by Joshua Mowll. The name comes from the mixture of the words gyroscope and astrolabe. The four gyrolabes were found in India by Alexander the Great's army in 326 BC. If all four gyrolabes are put together, than an incredible machine could be started. To keep there finding from Alexander, the army's general split his best troop, prodromoi, into four groups. Each group were given one gyrolabe and were ordered to carry them to either north, east, west and south of Asia. Two of the groups were called Sujing Quantou and the Kalaxx warriors who were mentioned above.
Characters: -Douglas Mackenzie( Doug) He is the one of the main character in the story. Doug is in his teens and is trapped in a very unstable life. Doug and Becca want to find their parents in the harsh desert of Sianking but on their way they are caught in a typhoon and is driven off course. He is talented in Science, Technology and Art, as you can see in the page I have scanned. -Rebecca Mackenzie( Becca) She is the main character. Becca is in her early teens, she is always worried about if her parents is alive or not , she is also artistic and caring. Becca and Doug skipped school to look for their parents, will they lose their talent, will they be able to keep up with their school work? Find out in the book.
What I thought about this book and other books you should read by this author This book was full of adventure. Joshua Mowll is very creative in this book, he had made some very cool devices such as they gyrolabe and the Molecule Invigorator( a device which strengthens metal). Not only he had some cool devices, he made it stand out by having foldouts in the book which tells me extra information. Josha Mowll has written very clearly and I understand what he has written in every chapter. For the reader to fully understand what is going on, Johua Mowll has added in an appendix at the end of the book. The appendix includes facts such as Typhoon damage to the Expedient, animals in the Celebes sea region and the history of the gyrolabe and the Sujing Quantou warriors. For the typhoon damage to the Expedient there are real pictures of the clouds, wave, Expedient, boiler room and the crew repairing the hull. Other books by Josha Mowll Before you even read this book, you should read the first book to the series which is also as thrilling as Operation Typhoon Shore and has won the British Book Awards, Operation Red Jericho.
