Even though it's Valentine's Day Before we get this started, I have to tell you that I'm sorry. This isn't a love poem. This isn't a poem about how much you mean to me, Or how strong you make me feel. This is not a love poem. I’m not going to tell you about all the questions that you’ve answered for me, Or about how much I want to mean to you, Or about how often I wonder what you're doing, And whether you're thinking about me, Or thinking about us, Or just thinking about Gods and birds of paradise trapped inside of your canvas. This probably isn't really even a poem, anyway.

I don't want to tell you a love poem. These words are supposed to mean something much more concrete than that. These words are designed to convey a thought my lips just can't express; This is a poem about how I can touch the face of god when I'm beside you, About how I can hear the whisper of something bigger than I’ll ever be whenever I look at you, About how I want to be a better person because of you; This is a poem about how badly I want to dance through all Paris with you, This is a poem about how I want to spray-paint your smile over the Pyramids; About how I want to climb up the Tower of Babylon with you, And see if falling in love with someone in a different language still feels the same. This is a poem about how I want to go back to high school with you, Just so I can call you up late at night, so we can talk on the phone again, Not saying shit for hours on end, Until we both fall asleep with the other one still on the line, So we can wake up together, Still worlds apart, But closer than we've ever been.

Don't get me wrong, though. This isn't a love poem. This is a poem about how you've taught me to know what art is again, Even though without you all I have to remember it by is a song that I can't quite yet understand. This a poem about writing, writing, writing this line eight, six, seven, nine thousand times, Over and over again. Because it never comes out just right, And it never sounds just the way I want it to, Because every time I try to put the words that matter together, All that comes to mind, Is you.

But this is not a love poem. This is a poem about something that’s much more, but also much less. This is a poem about how much I want to kiss you. About how much I want to grab your hand and run through the rain, Not caring if we get wet, Or need an umbrella, Just because you're right next to me. This is a poem about me trying to write down all of the ways I feel for you, and losing count somewhere in the middle, S-s-s-stuttering as I start over again, Not because I need to, And not because I have to, But because I want to.

This is not a love poem.
