Gertrude is a daughter of a german immigrant who ran a butcher shop on Amsterdam Avenue in Manhattan. Her father gave her permission to bob her hair as she expressed an interest in swimming.
In 1926, when Gertrude was 19, she swam the channel from the distance broke to previous record and stood as the womens record for 35 years. Her time was 14 hours and 39 mintues for the 35-mile.

Gertrude played herself in the 1927's movie, Swim Girl,Swim. She has poor hearing since she was a child due to the measles, and by the 1940's she was completely deaf. She spent the rest of her life teaching swimming to deaf children.
Best known as: the first woman to swim the English Channel. Personality Traits- Athletic.
