1972 Olympics
The 1972 Munich Games were the largest yet, setting records in all categories, with 195 events and 7,173 athletes from 121 nations.
Archery was reintroduced to the Olympic programme after a 52-year absence. Handball was reintroduced after a 36-year absence.
It represents a crown of rays of light, a design symbolizing the spirit of the Munich Games- light, freshness, generosity, expressed by the design “Radiant Munich”. It was created by Otl Aicher, the designed and director of the visual conception commission. His project was chosen in spite of a competition whose 2 332 entries were unsatisfactory.

Waldi, the dachshund. Very popular in Bavaria, but he also possesses qualities which are indispensable to an athlete : resistance, tenacity and agility. These are among the reasons he was chosen to be the mascot. He was dressed in pastel colours to express the gaiety and joy of the Olympic festival.

On September 5th eight Palestinian terrorists broke into the Olympic Village, killed two members of the Israeli team and took nine more hostage. The hostages were then killed along with 5 members of the terrorists and a police man.
