The Meteor Crater Close your eyes and imagine a million metric tonnes of rock travelling through space. Imagine it travelling at 70,000 kilometres per hour. Imagine ir crashing into the Earth. Imagine the result! A giant meteor crashed into the Earth 49,000 years ago. The result was a giant crater, 1,600 metres wide and 200 metres deep. It is the size of twenty football pitches.
