Activity 3.10 The standard that I am using that seems ambiguous is a TEKS standard for World History. It is TEKS 113.33 (2) History. The student understands how the present relates to the past. The student is expected to: (A) identify elements in a contemporary situation that parallel a historical situation; and (B) descbribe variables in a contemporary situation that could result in different outcomes. Some of the knowledge that a student must know in order to be successful in learning this objective includes knowledge of past events and current events. This includes details such as people involved, locations, events, purposes/objectives, et cetera. These details are crucial to being able to make valid comparisons and to being able to make an educated guess about possible different outcomes.
The patterns of reasoning needed to master this standard include being able to compare and contrast events, being able to identify patterns in events, and being able to evaluate events for reasonable variables (i.e. the date being different may work for one event, but not another) and potential outcomes. Although all are necessary, the ability to compare and contrast is probably most crucial. As for skills that students will need for this TEKS objective, comparative and analytical thinking are the most essential. Although these are the most necessary skills needed, the students must also have reading and research skills if the teacher is assessing this TEKS via individual research assignments. There are no products that need to be practiced for success, although most teachers will probably use comparing/contrasting charts or outlines for assessment, so students will most likely produce something as proof of understanding.
