The Peoples Temple
The church was started with the purpose of creating racial equality. Many of the members were African American. It seemed to have a good goal. Many of the proceeds went to giving clothes and food to the needy. Although to get the money they lied and faked religious healings.
The Wings of Deliverance Church was renamed the Peoples Temple April 4, 1955. Jim Jones was the leader and was ordained as a minister in 1960. In 1977 Jones set up Jonestown community in South America, for members of The People's Temple to escape the inequalities of life in America. On November 18, 1978 Congressman Leo Ryan went to ivestigate the community. Jones arranged for Ryan to be shot to death as he was leaving the airstrip. Later that day, over 900 people, 276 being children, commited mass suicide after being convinced by Jim Jones. He told them suicide was the only way to ecape the enemy who was going to invade the compound soon. Jim Jones was found with bullet wounds to the head, appearing to have killed himself as well.
Groups leader Rev. Jim JonesMay 13, 1931 – November 18, 1978
The bystander effect occured here when the people knew some things were morally wrong but did not say anything to prevent it. Pluralistic ignorance occured because the group was so large and they were all looking to each other for advice but the only authority figure was Jim Jones. When people surpressed their own ideas and followed the group they were demonstrating Groupthink.
The entire movement consisted of around 8,000 members .
