THESE ARE OUR HAPPY LITTLE SOURCES. ENJOY! http://bugs.bio.usyd.edu.au/Mycology/Struhttp:// www.worldbookonline.com/student/article?id=ar213540&st=hyphaectureFunction/hyphalStructure.shtml http://uk.encarta.msn.com/encyclopedia_761551534/Fungi.html
The Function of Hyphae The main purpose of hyphae is to absorb nutrients and moisture from the environment around them. They secrete several enzymes that break down complex protiens into simpler nutrients that the hyphae can absorb. We have named this process exodigestion because the food is digested before it enters the hyphae to be distributed though the rest of the fungus.
The Physiology of Hyphae The cell walls of hyphae are composed of chitin. and some also contain hemicelluloses.. Fungi in general need a lot of water and carbohydrates which hyphae collect.
The mass of hyphae is called a mycelium!
