The 7 Wonders of LFHS
Lesson Highlight:
In place of the traditional research paper, Ben Zollo’s Intro to US History students will be writing books geared toward elementary students about a specific person in American History. As they conduct research in the library, they write their information down on post-it notes (instead of notecards) that they then place on a large piece of posterboard according to specific categories, making notetaking and organizing research a more tactile experience. Cool idea!!
Children’s Picture Book Research Paper
Before Mr. Zollo’s classes began their more in depth research, however, they built some background knowledge and used a web program called Wordle to create a visual representation of the path their research would follow. Wordle is a tool for generating “word clouds” from text. The students read a biography on their person, taking note of key words and phrases that described that person and his or her accomplishments. They ranked the words in order of importance, entered them into Wordle and ta da!

National Poetry Month
April is National Poetry Month! So write some sonnets in your spare time, do an activity with your students, stop by the library to engage in poetry-related activities, or visit the library’s website to play with magnetic poetry!
April 11-17th is National Library Week! Help us celebrate libraries and all the services they offer by buying a cool T-shirt as part of a fundraiser to support the libraries in the area (the North Suburban Library System) that have lost their funding. Cost is $8. Stay tuned for more info.
