Sing Down the Moon
Canyon de Chelly The story takes place up in the mountains in a canyon where the Navajo village is . This is where we meet Bright Morning and her family . It has a river running through it and a pasture for sheep to graze . It has fertile soil which is good for the many crops that grow there .
The Story I think this is a historical and fictional story based upon a family's loyalty. I wonder if I would have the courage to go on the same long journey away from my home and lifestyle, to see friends struggle and die. This story showed the strength it takes to stand up for yourself.
The Navajo's lived in homes called hogans. Hogans are round teepee like built with forked sticks and animal hides. The front door of the hogan always faced east to catch the first light of the morning sun. They also built a six sided hogan of logs and mud. The hogan always had one room. The furniture of the hogans were tables, chairs, beds and wood burning stoves. A loom for weaving was set up outside the hogan.
The tomahawk is a type of axe used by the Navajo Indians. They were general purpose tools used to cut wood for timber and for hunting and killing. The handle was made of hickory, ash or maple. Stone heads were typically made of polished soapstone.
Map of Navajo Indian journey. Bright Morning's family had to flee their home in the canyon and were led to a camp where they were forced to live with little food and dirty water.
