Edgar Allan Poe was an American poet, editor, and literary critic of the early nineteenth century. He is best known for his tales of horror, mystery and the macabre. He is said to be the inventor of the detective story.
His poem, Annabel Lee, was written when his young bride Virginia Clemm died from tuberculosis at the age of twenty-five. The deep love he felt for his wife is evident through the melancholy tone, setting, imagery and haunting themes expressed in the poem
Edgar Allan Poe died in 1849 at the age of forty, and to this day his death remains a mystery.
