Guatamala was the home of the Mayan Civilization until the end of the 10th centuary, when the Spanish explorers enslaved the Mayans
Before the Genocide
At the end of the 19th century, a dictator took over Guatamala, and raised its economy dramaticly by encouraging everyone to invest in coffee plantations, within 30 years, America became its cheif investor. At this point the Indians, who were now just laborers, saw none of the wealth spread around.
In 1944, the current dictator was overthrown, and a new government came into power that put the natives first, giving reforms and allowing natives to gain a higher status.
But when American's buisness intrests were threatened, they said that communists were at work and trained Guatamalan exiles to overthrow the governement. There was a bloody invasion, and eventually America helped place a dictator in control of Guatamala. This act caused a civil war that lasted for 35 years, and during this the genocide began.
