Thaddeus Lowe was the first person to fly in a hot air balloon during a civil war in 1863. He took a nine hour and nine hundred mile flight from Cincinnati, Ohio to Unionville, South Carolina. On his way to South Carolina, he flew over Fort Sumter, was caught and had been arrested for being accused of spying for the union.
John Wise was one of several top American balloonists who made a bid for the aeronaut engineer, to build a hot air balloon for the union army. Against tough competition, Thaddeus Lowe and John LaMountain, he managed to attract enough attention to himself that he was recommended to build a balloon for surveillance and map making.
John LaMountain was aeronaut also bidding to be the union's aeronaut engineer. He was also John Wise's partner for a short time, they made plans for a transatlantic flight. Their attempt failed, the balloon was wreked and that ended their partnership. In the end, john was discharged from military service due to public derogation of Thaddeus lowe.
The balloons used in the civil war could climb up to 5,000 ft. and ranged in sizes from 15,000 cubic ft. up to 32,000 cubic ft.
The hot air balloons moved either by railroads, attached to a barge and towed down the river or they moved freely without any cables.
During the dark the confederates blacked out their camp and created fake camps to keep from being detected by the union.
The confederates hot air balloons were filled with either hot air. Where as the unions balloons were filled with gas from minicipal lines in washington D.C, they also used hot air too.
