Black soldiers in the Civil War
http://www.civilwarphotography.org/press.html This is where I got all of my pictures.
There were many soldiers and leaders that were African American and served in the Civil war. Some of these leaders were John A. Andrew,Frederic Douglas, and Col. Robert Gould Shaw. Douglas was an avid aboloitionist. John was also an abolitionist, but he was a govenor, too. And Robert was a colnerl. Some of the soldiers that served were Edward Williams, Sheldon Thomas, Jared Rogers, and hundreds more. These soldiers and leaders were a great help to the north in the Civil War. There were many regiments that were made up of black soldiers. There was the 54th regiment, The Native Guards, and many others. There were also many unofficial regiments. Some of the other things that they contributed to the war was doing the hard labor, and fighting in many battles and skirmishes.
Some of the military encounters that the black regiments faced were: the battle of Fort Wagner Repelling an attack on James island, and trying to recapture Florida. Other obstacles faced by these grave men was opposition of fighting in the war. Also, they were being paid $3 less than whites.

Here I am going to put some miscellaneous information. When the blacks were in the war, they would sing. They would this for entertainment, and for emotional support. When the goverment found out how helpful that the African Americans could be, the did many things to recruit them. Some of the things that they did were: Make recruitment posters, hire well known abolitioists, and put ads in the newspaper.
