Walt Whitman
Walt Whitman was born on May 31, 1819 in West Hills, Long Island in New York. he had father, mother, and seven brothers and sisters. His father was Walter Whitman. He was a carpenter and house builder. His father died on July 11th, 1855. His one brother George was wounded in the Civil War. Walt Whitman died in 1892. After his death he was know by many people as the poet laureate of the Civil War. He was also known as the good gray poet.
Walt only had a few years of public school. When he was older he became a printers devil for the long Island Patriot in 1832. he then taught stints in many long Island Schools. he was very successful in his career of poetry, and published Leaves of Grass in 1855.
Walt's reaction to the Civil War was anger. he slammed his fist into the pavement. Whitman inspired many of the soldiers. He put many of their names i his poems such as John Holmes, Oscar Wilber, Thomas Haley, Lewy Brown, Stewart Glover, Johnny Mahay, Frank Irwin, and Thomas Sawyer. Whitman aboided military service. he was a murses assistant in hospitals during the war. he wrote the sick, injured men letters, read to them, and brought them small gifts. For all of Walt's help to the soldiers, they gave him their love and friendship.
Walt Whitman wrote many peoms about the Civil War. Some of them are Come Up From the Fields father, which is about the sadness of families at war. The Runaway Slave, which is about the kind slaves from the North. Drum-Tap's which is about the patriotic militarism. The last peom is a Sequal to Drum-Tap's, which is about a tribute to lincoln.
