Andersonville prison We have all heard the rumors and mysteries surrounding Andersonville prison, well today it is time for everyone to know the truth. The Confederate prison Andersonville is in the village of Andersonville, located in the deep south, this lowely populated village has a close proximity to the Southwestern railroad that would deliver the prisoners. In early 1864 the prison’s construction began . The first 500 of Andersonville’s prisoners arrived on a train in Feb. 1864 when the prison consisted of 16.5 acres. By june the prison was over its limit of prisoners and was expanded 610ft to the north and soon consisted of 26.5 acres Our own Union Soldiers are as we speak being treated horribly in Andersonville, they suffer from the intense heat in the south, and have no shade. Prisoners are forced to make their own shelters , and part of the prisons grounds are covered by a swamp. Eyewitnesses and escapees report that if a soldier crosses a certain area called the ‘’Deadline” they are shot. On somedays prisoners receive no food, and raiders steal whatever the prisoners do have, and this was not helped by the fact that the officer in charge (Henry Wirz) has a terrible temper. Diseases are easily spread through the prison, such as , smallpox, scurvy, and dropsy. Sick men are treated with dirty bandages and there is no fresh water available. We predict that of the 45,ooo prisoners at Andersonville 13,000 will die. We hope that you take this issue personally and try to convince General Sherman to attack this prison and free our family and friends.
