Andersonville Prison other wise known as camp sumter was a confederate prison in the south ment to hold union soilders prisoner. Confederate Captin W Sidney Winder founded the prison in November 1863, and Captin Richard B Winder began constucting the prison in december of 1863. Prison was not finished until january 1864 when it was finished by slaves. Andersonville prison was located in Richmond va. and southwest Georgia, and it last from 1863-1864.
In Febuary 1864 union prisoners began arriving to the prison.. But in Juned 1864 the prison had to be expanded to 26 aceres. At this point the prison was ment to hold 10,000 prisoners but was cramed with 45,000 union soilders. Finally in september 1864 some prisoners began being shipped out but not all. The conditions here were worse than any other civil war prison leading to aproxomitly 13,000 deaths.
Andersonville prison was built to use in the civil war and after the civil war the land was sold and used for farming. After Andersonville prison was finally finished about 400 union prisoners arrived each day!
Most of the 13,000 deaths here were casued due to Diease, Filth, Exposer to heat, diease, and cold, also little to no medical care. The walls at Andersonville Prison were constructed of unhewn pine logs, and set verticly in trenched four feet deep. There were three walls surronding each other with the middle one standing 12 feet high.
