Born August 13, 1851 and he died May 13, 1937Johnny Clem one of the drummer boys ran away from home to join the army. The 22d Massachusetts adopted him. He was getting $13 month salary. They gave him a rifle and a uniform.
At the battle of Chickamauga many people were captures during this battle and Johnny got away by shoting an officer, and johnny also made the news in the North. Johnny was know as Johnny Shiloh, but his drum was smashed by a cannon.
The uniforms for the drummer boys were different colored than the troops because it was easier to be located with a different colored uniform. They got there own special uniforms because earlier they wore revised colored uniforms.
Johnny Clem, Michigan William Horsfall, Kentucky Charles Bardeen, Massachusettes Delavan Miller, New York Charles E. Mosby, Virginia Myron Philo Walker, Massachusetts Thomas Penny Packer, New Jersey David Martin, Iowa
Many people ran away from home for the army at the age of twelve to sixteen, younger than that would sometimes sneek in. A lot of them ran away to get fame and some others had reasons to want to join the army.
Some reasons for drums were to keep the soldiers in line and beat, they were also the heartbeat of the army and the voice of the command, an other instrument that helped the drums were the fifes.
