The robust structure of the Pompeiian amphitheatre survived the earthquakes and the eruption quite well. Marble seats were mined out. A single gladiator's helmet has been discovered in Herculaneum, but as yet no amphitheatre has been found.

EVIDENCE FROM THE SOURCES:
*Herculaneum- single galdiator's helmet
*Pompeii: -Reliefs, inscriptions, mosaics & wallpaintings (show activities, inluding the different types of blood sports, performed in the amphitheatre),
-Barracks for gladiators.
-More than 60 gladiators killed by eruption, including a woman wearing expensive jewellery.
-Graffiti indicates that the gladiators boasted about their prowess with women.

-3 sections of seating, with an upper-gallery-separated from the other areas- for women/ This area had separate stairs & entrances.
-Situated by the town wall in SE section.
-Held up to 20000 people
-Entrance ramps on outside; no underground areas
-The games that took place within the arena became so popular- with people coming from the surrounding countryside to see them- that the amphitheatre had to be enlarged.
-Oldest known amphitheatre
-Awnings could be erected in hot weather
