Life Under the Taliban in Afghanistan
The Taliban are a Suni Islam political movement that strictly follows the Islamic law. They ruled Afghanistan from 1996-2001. They were overthrown during Operation Enduring Freedom. The Taliban leader is Mullah Mohammed Omar. He is hiding in the mountains.
The Ta,iban set many rules for the people of Afghanistan. Some of the rules where: no music, no kite-flying, no shaving beards, women can't leave the house without a male relative, and girls can't go to school. Women also had to wear bukqas. Women could work at hospitals and street venders could still sell their things, but only to other women.
