When I Heard The Learn'd Astronomer -Walt Whitman When I heard the learn’d astronomer, When the proofs, the figures, were ranged in columns before me, When I was shown the charts and diagrams, to add, divide and measure them, When I was sitting heard the astronomer where he lectured with much applause in the lecture room, How soon unaccountable I became tired and sick, Till rising and gliding out I wander’d off by myself, In the mystical moist night air, and from time to time, Look’d up in perfect silence at the stars.
I chose this poem because I really like the message. The message to me in the poem is that we don’t need to be told how special and beautiful the sky and stars are. We don’t need to be told with information or graphs or tables. We should be able to figure it out our selves. I also like how the person only seems realize this after the astronomer tells her all the information and research. It is a really strong poem, if you think about the real message of the poem.
