When Tommie Smith and John Carlos accepted there gold and bronze medals, they: - Didn't wear shoes --- To represent the poverty in African American communties. -Wore Beads --- To honor the African Americans that were murdered during times of slavery and racism. -Held up a black gloved fist --- The black power salute These actions were all a great help to the Civil Rights Movemnet.

The Black Power Salute at the Olympics all started out with a good friend of Timmie and John, Harry Edwards. Harry Edwards had the idea to try to boycott the Olympic games. Timmie Smith and John Carlos then came up with a bette plan. They would do a non-violent protest, modeling off of Martin Luther King Jr. Well, this seemed to work, there is now a statue of the men in with their fists raised in Mexico City, home of the 1968 Olympics.
Tommie Smith won the glod medal, and John Carlos the bronze, both running in the 200 meter dash
