The First Crusade 1096-1099
The Crusades The Crusades were a series of wars from the 100s through 1200s in which European Christians tried to win control of the Holy Land from the Muslims. After Seljuk Turks invaded the Byzantine empire, they migrated from Central Asia into the Middle East, where they converted to Islam. The Seljuks extended their power over the Holy Land, which is the place where the Christians believed Jesus lived and preached. These invasions threatened the Byzantine empire, this prevented Christians from traveling to the Holy Land. The first Crusade lasted from 1096-1099 and was the first of many crusades to capture Jerusalum,
Why did the Crusades Occur? Feelng threatened by the Turks, the Byzantine Emperor Alexus the 1 asked Pope Urban for Christian knights to help. The Christians also hoped to recapture the sacred city of Jerusalum. and the Holy Land in order to spread the Christian Religion.
''Both knights and footmen, both rich and poor...[must] strive to help expel [the Seljuks] from our Christians lands before it is too late...Christ commands it. Remission of sins will be granted for those going thither''
What was the Outcome? More than 10,000 Christians gathered in order to take back the Holy Land. Although there was no formal leader of the Crusades, the Christians killed more than 70,000 Muslims while conquering the Jerusalum. ''The capture of Jerusalem did not end the Crusades as the Crusaders wanted to get rid of the Muslims from the whole region and not just Jerusalem. This desire led to the other crusades. ''
