TRANS- ATLANTIC SLAVE TRADE Overview Linking Europe, The America's and Africa,The Trans- Atlantic Slave Trade, which primarily consisted of African peoples, was one of the largest long- distance movement in history.
Trans- Atlantic Slave Trade
What was the Purpose? Lasting from the 16th century to the 19th century, almost 10 million Africans were transported to the New World. Due to the cheapness of land, almost all Europeans were able to afford their own; therefore, plantation owners needed workers. Although the Europeans enslaved the Native Americans, small pox and diseases began to kill them off. In order to fill the labor shortages, the Europeans obtained workers from Africa
How were the Conditions? The journey for Africans was terrible. After being captured form inland villages, men, women, and children were forced to walk to coastal ports. Once purchased at coastal ports, the Africans were packed below the decks of slave ships. Hundreds of Africans were forced in one vessel. Disease became very prevelant and Africans usually died of smallpox. However, others died from the brutality aboard the ships. It is estimated that 2,000 enslaved Africans were sent to the America's each year.
