Alexander the Great: Intro by Sarah, Amy, and Ali
Son to King Philip II and Olympius and born in 356 B.C, Alexander the Great's legend still lives on today (Whitten). Engaging in military warfare at age 13, Alexander was a born military leader (History of Alexander the Great.) Very shortly after his father's death, Alexander assembled troops to invade Asia Minor and defeat the Persians, his arch enemies. Alexander and his troops went on to conquer Asia Minor, Egypt, Seria, Babylonia, and even the Persians (History of Alexander the Great).

Alexander's Childhood
Bucephalus: History's Greatest Horse
''O My son, look thee out a kingdom equal to and worthy for thyself, for Macedonia is too little for thee.''--King Philip II. This quote is what drove Alexander to start his conquest to the ''ends of the earth,'' so that he could make the Macedonia greater. His main goal was to defeat the Persians. (Whitten.)
Plutarch explains how Bucephalus was offered to Philip for thirteen talents (the currency then). Bucephalus was a giant black beast with a white blaze on his face. The name ''Bucephalus'' means ''Ox head.'' This name is suiting since, Bucephalus was known for his immense head. Philip was uninterested though because Bucephalus could not be tamed. However, Alexander made the observation that the horse was spooking at his own shadow. (Bucephalus.)He promised to pay for the horse if he could not tame it. Alexander managed to tame the giant beast by turning Bucephalus towards the sun so that he could not see his own shadow. From that day forward, Bucephalus trusted Alexander, and the two rode into numerous victories. (Bucephalus.)

Because King Philip II was too busy with warfare and politics, Alexander had a strong bond with his mother, Olympias. She was a great influence in his life. Wanting nothing less for their son, Alexander's mother and father hired Aristotle to be his personal teacher. When Alexander was of the age of thirteen, he began educating him about zoology, biology, politics, and several other topics. Alexander had a fascination with the book ''Homer's Iliad.'' Alexander admired the character Achilles greatly and aspired to be just like him. (Alexander the Great Timeline) At only age sixteen, Alexander began helping his father rule Macedonia. At age twenty, after his father's assassination, Alexander had to take over the kingdom by himself. (Alexander the Great Timeline.)
