Today on the 4th of August we have recieved news that the Spanish Armada battle is over and that the English have victory! What made us win the war, was it our equipment, tactics and crew? Most people think it was. Here is a summary of the defeat of the Armada. On the 27th of July the Spanish fleet anchored off Calais. So things so far were looking good for the Spanish as the English had failed to stop them and their fleet was intact. However from then on a combination of bad decisions, luck and weather brought about the defeat of the Armada. At midnight on the 28th July the English set 8 of their ships alight and carefully let them drift near to a group of the Spanish fleet. But Medina-Sidonia was expecting this and tried to move his fleet away, this then turned out to be impossible due to the wind and tide. The next day the English attacked the last few straggling ships. On the 30th July just when the English thought that they could surround the Spaniards the wind changed. allowing the Spanish fleet to escape into the North Sea. So they tried to return home. Later, on the 2nd of August an English fleet had been chasing the Spanish all the way up to Scotland and then returned back on this day.
Then eventually some commanders ran their ships aground and took all the crew off the ships. Some even cut food rations and threw horses over board in order to save water! Finally the Spanish had to give up as they did not have enough ships, amunitions or crew left to fight. So the English had won!!! After the victory we spoke to Billy Button who was part of the crew onboard one of the English ships. He said, ''It is a great feeling to know that we have won and that I was part of the crew that helped lead the English to victory, it is truly a great memorable event.''
