A smart card is any pocket sized card which has an embedded integrated circuit that allows it to store information. For example, Lion Cash from Penn State University allows your parent to put money on the card so you can purchase things at the participating stores.
Promotion is when a company gives a special offer in order to make an item look more desirable. For example, when you buy one bottle of soda and you get a second one free.
An up-sell is when a salesperson tries to get the customer to buy a more expensive item in order to make more of a profit. For example, if you were buying a plain silver bracelet the salesperson may suggest you get the same bracelet but with charms on it.
