In order to get through it, the need each other. 3."As if he wanted to convince himself that this man adressing him was really a creature of flesh and bone" This is meaningful because the soldiers didnt see the jews as people, they saw them as evil demons that should be diminished. 4."Work is liberty" this is meaningful because on the Auschwitz wall it had that poster and they tried to make the labor the Jews were doing seem like the right thing to do or as if the Jews owed them something in return. 5."Everyone lives and dies for himself alone" This is meaningful because a Jew was saying this to Elie and basically they have no hope and in a concentration camp theys ay there is no family, and that it is every man for himself
Night Elie Wessel
The novel "Night" is written by the famous Elie Wiesel. He writes this story in flashback during the time of World War II. Elie Wiesel is a fourteen year old boy who lives in Sighet,Transylvania. Elie wants to sudy the religion of Judism however, his father, who is a prominent leader of the Jewish community, thinks that he is too young. So then, Elie Wiesel goes to a humble man named Moshe the Beadle and starts studing the cabala. No one would listen to Moshe preech and the people of Sighet thought that fascism would never come to them. Moshe the Beadle was soon deported with sevral other jews to a concentration camp. Somehow he manages to escape and comes to warn the people of the danger they are in. They refuse to believe him, however, and think that he is either insane or just wants attention. The Sighet people carried on with their normal lives until 1944 when when Germany takes over Hungary. When Elie's father is suddenly asked to a meeting of the Jewish Council he has bad news, All the jews will be sent to a concentration camp and Elie and the rest of Sighet begin to pack their belongings. First, they move to a smaller ghetto where they meet a servant named Martha who offers to hide them in the country. The family says the would not be separated. When they have to leave again they are all forced into a small train where the Novel brings up a new characther, Madame Schaechter who is thought as crazy because she see's things that are not there. Every night, she would scream "fire!" and wake up the people. she is hit and beaten till she stops. The people of Dighet are dumbfounded when the train arrives at Auschwitz and they see the burning flames Madame was talking about. Later, men and women are separated so Elie is still with his father but separated from his mother and sister.The prisoners then march past SS officer Dr. Mengele, who "selects" who will live and who will go to the crematory. Elie and his father are petrified when they are called to the crematory,At the last minute, the line of men turns away from the flames. The prisoners are then forced to shower, then put on new clothes.He and his father are sent to a gypsies camp and the prisoners go to Auschwitz. Everything is going fine until they are moved to Buna.At Buna Elieis placed in a good work position, the musician's block, where all he has to do is make sure everything is going fine in the warehouse. It is then when he meets Yossi and Tibi. The foreman Franek gets Eliezer's father placed in the same block also. He beats him for Elies crown tooth for some extra food. One day, a German leader is furious so he decided to beat Elie. Another time, he walks in when the same leader is having an affair with a polish woman and he is punished again. Elie refuses to celebrate Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. he still believes in God and knows he is their, he questions Him helping the Jews and creating Concentration Camps. Later, his foot swells and must be amputated. Later, another selection is being made for who goes into the crematory. When his father is chosen, Elie creates a huge disturbance and saves him. When they arrive at Buchenwald, Elie's father is too weak to go on and begs his son to let him sleep in the snow. Elie can't find him and when he does he takes care of him and gives him his own food. When he finds that he is about to die he tells Elie where gold is hidden, He keeps getting attacked when he is weak and one time when he calls Elie for water a german soldier comes and shatters his skull. He is removed from the camp and Elie is ashmed for some reason. Eliezer remains at Buchenwald until April 11 and is sent to the children's block. On April 11, there is a battle between the camp resistance and the SS, and the was resistance winning. That evening an American tank arrives at the camp. When they were free Elie was hospitalized for two weeks. He couldnt believed what happened to himself.
Conflict and soultion- The main conflict of this Novel is the Holocaust. Elie Wiesel and is town are taken over by the Germans and sent to many different conentration camps. He must endure abuse from his foreman, Franek, Idek his SS leader, gypies, and even other Jews themselves. The soultion to all of the horror was a day called "D-Day" in 1944. In the end of the book an American book comes and rescues the Jews. Finally when the german troops are destroyed, the suffering Jewish people were aided and Eliezer was hospitalized for 2 weeks.
Book Theme- The theme of this book is that family is essential and under any circumstances you have to stay together. This is because Elie attempted to keep his family together, and didn't want to be separated. When women were separated from men he only had his father and clinged on to him and tried his best to keep him alive. he gave him food, hospitality, and tried to protect him from harm and violence. In other words, family is golden.
Main Characters Description- Eliezer Wiesel- an eighteen year older boy who is jewish and lives in the town of Sighet. He is very introspective and smart in terms of what to do in a situation. He is not to big, and slim which didnt help him in Auschwitz. Elie's Father- A prominent member in the Jewish council of Sighet. He is caring, cultured, and he was concerned more of other poeple then his family. He never displayed any emotion, until being labored. Moshe the Beadle- An awkward man however he has made people smile. Moshe was as humble as he was poor. he made himself seem invisible even though he had dreaming eyes that lost in the distance and is very religious. He teaches Elie the cabala, and tries to warn everyone of the Germans invading. A true man of work. Idek- A SS soldier who is young and very strong. He often has rampages and takes it out on Elie. He is a very harsh soldier and is very unmerciful. Franek- A foreman who used to work as a dentist. He is suspicious and wanted Elie's crown tooth. He thrashed Elies father each day because Elie's father told him not to give him the tooth. He was harsh but later became kinder. Yossi & Tibi- Two brothers who worked in the same unit as Eliezer. They were also Czech's and lived for each other and were attached. They are friendly and quickly become friends with Elie. They all had parents who acted the same way and wanted to leave Europe imediatly and did.
