Curitiba is a Brazilian city, capital of the state of Parana, located 934.6 meters of altitude in the first plateau of Paraná, about 90 kilometers from the Atlantic Ocean. According to the American magazine Reader's Digest, is the city with better quality of life in Brazil. It is the seventh most populous city in Brazil and the largest south of the country with a population of 1,851,215 inhabitants. It is the main town in the Metropolitan Region of Curitiba, formed by 26 municipalities and has 3,172,357 inhabitants over an area of 15,447 kilometers ², making it the eighth most populous metropolitan area in Brazil. Founded in 1693, from a small pioneer village, Curitiba became an important stop shopping with the opening of the road between tropeira Sorocaba and Viamão. In 1853 it became the capital of the newly emancipated province of Parana and since then the city, known for its wide streets, maintained a pace of urban growth strengthened by the arrival of a large number of European immigrants throughout the nineteenth century, most Germans, Poles, Ukrainians and Italians, who contributed to the cultural diversity that remains today. The city has experienced several urban plans and laws that sought to contain their uncontrolled growth that led to become internationally famous for its innovations and careful urban environment, the largest one being in the public transport system, which inspired the TransMilenio transportation system Bogotá, Colombia. Today, the city has a sense of cosmopolitan life, a capital with better quality of life in Brazil, with a diversified industrial center that gives the rank of 4th largest economy in Brazil and considered one of the 5 best cities to invest in America America. Curitiba also has high levels of education. Has the lowest illiteracy rate and best quality in basic education between the capital and is home to aa first university in Brazil, Federal University of Parana, founded in 1912.
