My Culture
Music - it has and always will be a massive part of my life. I was brought up listening to loads of different bands, ranging from Oasis to Robbie Williams and The Jam to Blondie. My love for music has never left me and I love discovering a new favourite band. As well as listening to music, for me making music has been just as exciting. I started to sing when I was young and went on to learn violin and piano. I stopped playing violin in year 6 when I decided it wasn't for me, but carried on learning piano until I was 15. Although I liked playing, following grades and playing scales wasn't really for me.
Two years ago, after stopping piano, I decided to try teaching myself guitar, something I had always wanted to do. I taught myself some basic chords and looked on the internet for songs. I was amazed at how many songs used such simple chords! Although I had always loved to sing, I had never been that confident singing on my own. Playing guitar at the same time seemed to stop that and soon I was learning more chords and more songs. It was great to be able to play and sing the songs I loved. After a while I decided to try writing my own songs. It was hard at first but I really enjoyed it and it gave me an outlet for emotion. I took inspiration from bands I liked but tried to also create my own style.
As I became more confident I started to play my songs to friends and family and got them to give me feedback. The positive responses made me want to take it further, so I decided to follow the craze at the time and create a music Myspace page. Recording songs on my laptop, I uploaded songs and photos and gave links to my friends and families. As they told their friends, I soon had more people hearing my music. The quality of the recordings was really not great, but it was a way to show people what I did. My music Myspace limited me to uploading 4 songs, and I kept it for the songs I had written myself. My main reason for playing guitar was for fun, and I still loved playing covers and decided I wanted to put them on the internet to see what people thought - that's where Youtube came in....
How it started...
My Music MySpace
I already had a YouTube account and my phone was able to take video's, so i recorded myself singing my song 'Rules and Regulations' and uploaded that as my first video. I then added more videos, both irigional songs and covers, and I now have over 80 videos, 119 subscribers and 109,682 video views. For me, Youtube was a great way to get my music heard and I continue to upload songs today. A friend recently got some good quality recording eqipment and I plan to record some origional songs and covers to put on an album to give to family and friends. Then I can get feedback on my music and I will gain for cultural capital from having recordings on a CD. My family and friends can also then play my music to others, increasing my audience and giving me more value as an artist. If I get posetive feedback I hope to go on to record songs professionally in future.

The next step for me is to start playing live music to audiences as i know think i have enough material and confidence to do so. I have performed some origional songs in school productions which i really anjoyed. I recently went through auditions for the annual East Hampshire talent competition, 'Show Off's'. Over 60 acts auditions and I got selected for the final 16 and will be competing against 7 other acts in my age group on 17th April at Horndean Technology College. I will be playing infront og over 250 people and really look forward to the experience. By reaching this stage I have gained a higher status as a singer songwritter and if i do well my music will have more value. I am hoping this will launch my career further, and I am hoping to perform at music events this summer, play at pubs or find some open mic nights to go to..
