Survival is a very important theme in Huck Finn because throughout the novel there is always a rushing sense of danger. Huck and his friends must constantly think on their feet to stay out of harms way. The earliest example of Huck using his ?''street smarts,'' is when he sneeks past Jim and the Widow to play with Tom Sawyer. There are better examples later on that illustrate the theme more literally. For example Huck slaughters a pig and makes Pap's cabin look like a murder seen because he could have been killed if he stayed in Pap's drunken clutch any longer! The theme of survival also shows different, usually more cunning, sides of the characters, especially Huck! Survival is a theme that isn't really touched upon much, but it is just as important.
