Muslim Reactions to the First Crusade
To understand the Muslim Reaction to the First Crusade, one must first establish what was happening at the Muslim world at the time.
The year of 1294 was termed the "year of the death of the caliphs." This power vacuum caused domestic chaos in the Muslim world; Muslims were looking to sort out their own internal problems before thinking about foreign problems.
This explains the general 'apathy', for lack of a better word, that the Muslims displayed toward the Europeans. Resources that could have gone to fighting the Europeans instead went towards solving internal issues. The Muslims also did not want to fight a war over sea, and would rather have the Europeans come to them.
It can be theorized that this internal struggle is what allowed the Crusaders to prevail in this Crusade. The Muslims did not even care enough about the Europeans to try and learn their language or anything else about them.
