In this crusade, we begin to see the Muslims tire of the European crusades and begin to treat them as insignificant.
This is evidenced by a few key points:
The Muslims did not even prepare for the siege of Damiette, showing that they did not percieve the incoming crusaders as a threat.
Instead of trying to hold Jerusalem, the Muslims just destroyed the fortifications of the city, preventing the crusaders from holding it. This shows that the Muslims were tired of fighting over Jerusalem, and would rather cripple it than keep battling over it.
The Muslims defeated the Crusaders by waiting until they were low on supplies and had their retreat route blocked by the river Nile. This shows that the Muslims knew the crusaders and their tactics by now, and were able to take advantage of them.
When negotiating peace with the crusaders, the Muslim representative offered up a piece of the 'True Cross" - an object that the Muslims did not possess. This shows that the Muslims were not afraid of the repercussions of the crusaders finding this out and did not take them seriously.
