Sierra Leone
First colonized in 1787 when the British founded Freetown (now the capital) as a settlement for Africans freed from slavery.
In 1808 Sierra Leone becomes an English Colony.
1961 Sierra Leone becomes an independent country. This was bad though because England took everything with them. Including the economy.
Sierra Leone declared a republic country in 1971, Stevens becomes executive president.
In 1991 the start of the Sierra Leone civil war. Rebels vs Government.
In 1999, November/December - UN troops arrive to police the peace agreement - but one rebel leader, Sam Bokari, says they are not welcome. Meanwhile, Ecomog troops are attacked outside Freetown
In 2000, UN forces come under attack in the east of the country, but far worse is in store when first 50, then several hundred UN troops are abducted.
In 2002 July - British troops leave Sierra Leone after their two-year mission to help end the civil war.
By 2002 almost all of the Sierra Leone Rebels were disarmed and labeled not dangerous
