Fashion Timeline (scroll down) (1825) - The large puffed sleeves were fashionable from 1825-1840. (1825-1850)- The Romantic Era (1840)- Stiff horse-haired petticoats were sold. (1850-1870)- Hoop Era. (1856)- The Hoop became popular for ladies to wear. (1873)- The First Bustle was born. Mourning Apparel Out of respect it was considered proper and honorable for a lady to follow a certain dress code when mourning the loss of a loved one. Depending on the closeness of the loved one a black crepe dress and black gloves were to be worn for a period of twelve to eighteen months. Black silk, granadine, and more elegant materials were considered acceptable later on into the mourning period.
