Aluminum is the third greatest element of the earth’s crust, following behind oxygen and silicon. The metal originally got its name from the Latin word for alum, alumen. The word alumina was proposes in 1761 for the base in alum. It was shown in 1787 to be a yet discovered metal. In 1807, finally someone proposed to have the metal be called aluminum. It was altered to instead end being spelled with “ium”, like most elements. In 1925 the American Chemical Society changed the word back to aluminum for good, and that is now how it is normally spelled in the United States. Although the existence of aluminum was established in 1808, it took years of research to find an efficient method to unlock the metal from its ore. It took even longer to create a production process that would allow the metal to be commercially practical.
