FM
In the mid 1930’s, the same person who figured out the wiring to AM radio, came up with a whole new approach to transmitting signals. Major Edwin Armstrong, the inventor, was a clear genius, and still considered a great inventor in radios history. AM radios limitations included, static interference from household appliances, limited audio quality and nighttime interference between many stations. Major Edwin Armstrong wanted something with less, so he invented it. He took his invention to his friend, who was the head of RCA, and he said he would help to develop it. RCA bought into the patents, and helped to develop an experimental radio station, to test out the creation. RCA then had to protect the already existing AM radio station, and didn’t want the competition for the more improved FM radio system. Years of legal battles went on that RCA could afford, but not Armstrong. The FM radio station got shut down. Eventually by 1941, FM stations were on the air.
