Starting off by being called “Hormel Flavor-Sealed Ham” in 1926, it wasn’t a inspiring enough name for something meant to save lives, win wars, and give people balanced diets around the world. It was a great invention that needed no refrigeration, so great for the soldiers. Too bad the name for the lunch meat wasn’t very catchy, and that’s why they decided to change it. They had a $100 reward for the person with the best naming idea, and that was where SPAM came in. The legend was born. Also known as “The Miracle Meat”, the first SPAM can came off the production line in 1937. It was sold everywhere, and had various tastes that worked for many lifestyles for people around the world. It started by winning over hearts of soldiers, and world leaders, and now charms chefs kids and parents too. The first SPAM commercial was introduced in 1940, as the first singing commercial. In 1960 SPAM was sold in not only 7 ounce cans, but also 12 ounce cans. In 1971, the variations of SPAM began arising. It is now a world- wide food, and was one of the great inventions of World War 2.
