FAMILY Poe was an extraordinary writer, ''the father of horror''. He was born on January 19th, 1809 in Boston, Massachusetts. His mother, Elizabeth Arnold, was an actress who provided for the children for the parents were split. Poe's father, David Poe, was Elizabeth's second marriage. After she died of tuberculosis in 1811. Poe was adopted into the family of John Allan, a tobacco merchant. His brother, Henry, went to live with his grandparents and his sister, Rosalie, was adopted into another family. He married Verginia Clemm, his 13-year-old cousin.
SCHOOL Poe went to schools in England when he was six for five years. He studied Latin, French, math and history. Edgar then returned to the United States and went to school in Richmond. He registered at the University of Virginia on February 14, 1826, where he was very active in the literary society. Although he did fairly well in school he started to drink heavily; Edgar failed to pay which meant he only attended the university for less than a year.
ARMY Edgar had no money, no job skills and was shunned by Mr. Allan, his adopted father. He moved to Boston and Poe, or should I say Perry, enlisted in the army in 1827 under the name of Edgar A. Perry. He was 18 and did reasonably well for he earned the rank of senior-major. Mrs. Allan died and John Allan communicated to Edgar who then signed his application to go to West Point. He went to go live with his grandmother and aunt. Poe went to West point as a cadet and it was said that he purposely broke the rules so he would be dismissed.

BIBLIOGRAPHY
ENDURING FAME ''Poe's slashing reviews and sensational tales made him widely known as an author'' (the Poe Museum) One of the most recognized works ''The Raven'' is now a football team, The Baltimore Ravens. ''Each year, hundreds of books and articles, some scholarly others in a lighter vein, are written about one of more facets of Poe’s life or works.'' (Edgar Allan Poe Society of Baltimore) He has inspired writers, play writers, filmmakers, artists and composers. Poe is so well known in America that he was in '' The Simpsons''. There is something in his writing that is for everyone. It embraces every emotion, joy, fright, hate, passion, and rage. ''The purpose, then, of studying Poe and his works (or any writer and his or her works) is not to come to understand the writer, but to understand the reader — to explore what we believe or feel by comparing and contrasting with Poe and his characters. '' (Poe society)
TIME LINE To put things into perspective I listed the major events that happened during Edgar Allan Poe's life Time. I did not realize that Poe lived such a long time ago. When Poe was born Thomas Jefferson is President and Abraham Lincoln was born in the same year. He was three years old when the war of 1812 started and Charles Dickens, another great writer of the time was born.
Throughout his life other writer like Mark Twain and Emily Dickinson were born. Poe turned 22 and that year slavery was banned in Great Britain. When Edgar was 29 his main books started popping up. A year before he died the California gold rush had begun. Several important things happened in the early 1800's.
