Annie is eight years old when Germany controlled Holland, because she was Jewish she knew she would have to hide from Hitler and the Nazi party. Her family was separated so that they would survive. She and her 19 year old sister were forced to stay together throughout this separation. They were sent to live with a Gentile family, the Oostervelds. Her sister and her stayed with this family for two years in hiding while hoping the war would end soon. The war seemed to last forever to Annie and Sini (her sister) because they had to stay in a tiny, closed-off room.
This book is non-fiction. Johanna Reiss wanted to write this book to show what Jews went through, and what she went through. Not only were the concentration camps terrible during the holocaust, but also the fact of hiding in a small cramped room.
Facts addressed in the book: -German soldiers struggled in Russia because of the weather and snow. -Italy and Japan were the major allies of Germany during WWII. -Benito Mussolini was arrested by his own country. -Hitler and Mussolini were best friends during WWII. -France, Belgium, Luxembourg, Norway, United Kingdom, Poland, Greece, Albania, Yugoslavia, Soviet Union, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and the United States were enemies of Germany during World War II.
I would recommend this book for anyone interested in learning more about the Holocaust. This book is unique because Annie wasn't sent to a concentration camp. She has a different perspective than Elie Wiesel or Anne Frank because she hid throughout the whole war instead of being caught and taken away. I would recommend that females read this book over males, mainly because the main character, Annie, is a female.
