Poetry is a form of literary art in which language is used for its aesthetic and evocative qualities in addition to, or in lieu of, its ostensible meaning. Poetry may be written independently, as discrete poems, or may occur in conjunction with other arts, as in poetic drama, hymns or lyrics.

project: life is like a butterfly

i used to live in florida with my best friend, monica. she always wrote poems to me, and i ended up kind of relying on those poems in life. my favorite poem was one called 'life', which left me to tears when i moved to washington just last year.

Poetry often uses particular forms and conventions to expand the literal meaning of the words, or to evoke emotional or sensual responses. Devices such as assonance, alliteration, onomatopoeia and rhythm are sometimes used to achieve musical or incantatory effects. Poetry's use of ambiguity, symbolism, irony and other stylistic elements of poetic diction often leaves a poem open to multiple interpretations. Similarly, metaphor and simile create a resonance between otherwise disparate images—a layering of meanings, forming connections previously not perceived. Kindred forms of resonance may exist, between individual verses, in their patterns of rhyme or rhythm. Some forms of poetry are specific to particular cultures and genres, responding to the characteristics of the language in which the poet writes. While readers accustomed to identifying poetry with Dante, Goethe, Mickiewicz and Rumi may think of it as being written in rhyming lines and regular meter, there are traditions, such as those of Du Fu and Beowulf, that use other approaches to achieve rhythm and euphony. In today's globalized world, poets often borrow styles, techniques and forms from diverse cultures and languages.

i sometimes wonder if 'life' is like a samuri's code of living, and i wonder if i could follow it. i'd spend my entire life trying to, just for my friend monica, but then i remember that i'm just an ordinary girl, living in an ordinary world.

the first verse tells you that every person living is a butterfly, and that a butterfly is every living person. then the poem adds that you fly and fly and fly, meaning that you are going through life without any pauses. the next verse shows that you are flying and flying and you are, obviously, alive during this time, then you die, and no biggie. life is like a butterfly. in other words, the average person dies, and there, nothing is going to chance. you can't unfix the deaths, and so, life is like a butterfly.

my conclusion: it is possible to live by a poem, especially one like 'life', because you are already living by it! most people don't notice it, but really, this poem tells you that life is a very natural thing that you shouldn't go messing around in. it works the way is works. -marshee

it's beautiful, mainly because it's true, but it doesn't give all the hints on what it's telling you, therefore, you need to read it...

this is this little fun thing i did with myself where i was 'doing experiments' on a poem my friend wrote. i hope you like it, even though it's kind of hard to read everything. don't worry about not being able to read the tiny text or whatever behind things, that's just so it looks more realistic! those are all just 2 meanings of 'poetry' repeated over and over again. lol. :D enjoy! please comment, rate, tell me stuff, be my friend, and check my other glogs!! :)
