FREEDOM
In this book, Freedom is the most prodominent theme expressed by the author. As the novel begins, Huckleberry Finn wants to find both freedom and refuge from his abusive father, Pap. As he later on travels, he finds himself becoming very good friends with a runaway slave named Jim. Jim's main goal is to travel his way to a free state so that he can work as an employee and not as a slave to earn money so that he can buy back the rest of his family. ?Huck decides to join him and to assist Jim in his mission to have a family again. Huck and Jim travel by night and sleep by day. Their only way to travel is by a raft on a river, as it is the fastest and most hidden way to move without being seen. The raft itself becomes a symbol for freedom for Huck and Jim.
Huck and Jim use this raft to float to their freedom.
Jim had a warrant out for his arrest as he was both a run away slave and a suspected murderer
Well, if I ever struck anything like it, I'm a nigger. It was enough to make a body ashamed of the human race." Chapter 24, pg. 178
