With a closer look at: Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) aka Dimethicone
Bonding within a molecule of dimethicone: All single, covalent bonds
Since dimethicone is a polymer, it does not have a set molecular mass. As seen in the image to the left, the number of units of the part of the molecule within the brackets is determined by the value of n. Hence, molecular mass varies for this molecule.
Uses: - hair and skin conditioning - skin protectant - film former -viscosity increasing agent - anti-foaming agent - easy sliding such as in deodorants - moisturizers - facial treatments - Silly Putty - food additive
Effects of usage: - interferes with human hormone production - may impair human fertility - uterine tumors (with high dosage exposure) - influence on neurotransmitters in the nervous system (with high dosage exposure)
Through personal reasearch, it remains unclear when dimethicone was first discovered or when it was first used. However, years as to when it was first approved by health organizations and reviews are available and are as follows: - 1974/1984: WHO - 2006: FDA - 2006: CIR (Cosmetic Ingredient Review) - 2008: EC (Environment Canada)
