WHERE: •Famine stopped precisely at the Ukrainian- Russian ethnographic border •Confined to Ukraine •Therefore, Ukrainians could not cross the border to search for food
The Ukrainian Famine
By: Rachael Doherty and Meagan Henkelman
WHO Joseph Stalin helped create the famine and the Ukrainians under his rule were the victims. Later, other countries became involved in helping the Ukrainians. The death rate of Ukrainians was 17/minute, 1,000/hour, 25,000/day.
WHAT •Once Stalin gained power, he used it against the Ukrainians •Stalin forced issue of farm collectivization •Stalin raised grain quotas of government increased amount of grain needed for government by 44% so that they could not be met
HOW •If Stalin did not gain power in 1924, the famine would not have been likely to happen •If soviet laws about grain quotas changed, increasing government demand for grain would not have hurt the Ukrainian farmers
Reasons for genocide •Stalin hated the Ukrainians because they wanted to separate from the Soviet Union •Stalin regime forced a farm-collectivization program •Soviet law stated peasants could not get grain until government quota met, he used it to get rid of the Ukrainians who opposed his rule •Wanted Soviet Union under common culture •The Great Depression could have help lead to the genocide. With the economy in turmoil, Stalin could have thought that raising grain quotas would help stabilize the economy if they were affected with the Great Depression
WHY •Stalin wanted to destroy the people in Ukraine who were seeking independence from his rule •Soviet law stated no grain could be given to peasants until quota was met; Stalin used it to starve the Ukrainians
When •1932-1933 •It lasted a period of 18 months •As soon as news of the famine reached the US and Europe, food and supplies were sent out however it was stopped at the border
Quick Facts •Russians denied the famine was a genocide •Walter Duranity (reporter) won an award for falsifying conditions in Ukraine •Inside the Soviet Union, a person could be arrested for even using the word 'famine' or 'hunger' or 'starvation' in a sentence.
Nothing much could have been done to prevent the Ukrainian Famine. The only thing that could have been done would be not giving Stalin power after the passing of the former leader of the Soviet Union, Vladimir Lenin.
Hitler Association with the Jews would get them sent to internment camps Promised to deny the Treaty of Versailles, fix the economic turmoil Propaganda used to glorify himself German nationalism stronger than Eurocentric nationalism Leader of Germany Jews ruined economy Wanted people united Given Sudetenland at Munich Conference
Similarities Fear installed into people Bribed people into giving them power Propaganda used to glorify leader Country’s nationalism superior to any other nationalism dictators Grudge against people targeted Wanted a unified country Appeasement from other parties
Comparion between Hitler and Stalin
Stalin If you stood up to the government, forced to labour camp or starvation Strength of his policies gave him power Propaganda used to glorify policies Soviet nationalism superior to ethnic nationalism Leader of Soviet Union Ukrainians wanted independence Wanted to “Russify” the people Given power after Lenin’s death
Holocaust Jews During WWII Nobody knew what was going on until after the camps were liberated Bodies were burned in mass graves 6 million people killed Property destroyed Only warning was from those who escaped and did not get shot Madame Schchter foreshadowed crematories Family was separated German army attempted to cover up what was going on in the concentration camps All people sent to labour camps Food taken away as punishment People had to fend for themselves Gas chamber used to kill people
Similarities Aimed towards a specific ethnic group Ruled by dictator when genocide broke out Other countries became actively involved in trying to save the people Bodies disposed of like trash Mostly children killed Property was seized by government Took people by surprise, were not expecting to get caught in it People knew that death was coming for them, death was foreshadowed Families wanted to remain together no matter what Wanted the world to see that they were doing nothing wrong People were sent to labour camps Food manipulated Survival was difficult People were shot if they escaped the area
Comparison between the Holocaust and the Ukrainian Famine
Ukrainian Famine Ukrainians During the Interwar Era Other countries stepped as soon as they heard about the famine Bodies were dumped in mass graves 10 million people killed Property used to gain wealth No warning Recognized their future (i.e. Death) Family able to stay together Soviet Union influenced people to lie about the conditions in Ukraine People either starved or were sent to labour camps
Ultranationalism is very responsible for creating genocide because the leader is striving towards fulfilling the national interests of a country. Stalin was so involved in pursuing the national interests of the country that human rights became non-existent and they meant nothing to Stalin.
